Tips for Caring for Your Designer Eyewear

Posted May 24, 2024 | Tips, Tricks & Tech

If you’ve visited the Eyeconic® blog before, you probably know all the reasons designer glasses are worth the investment. Given how much time we spend wearing our eyewear, it makes sense that we’d want to invest in the most stylish, comfortable eyewear possible. But luxury eyewear is just that: an investment. And like any investment, you’ll want to make sure that you protect your new eyewear from getting damaged.

Because you’ll be wearing your glasses so often, this task may be easier said than done. But don’t fret: we’ve put together a list of all the ways you can protect your luxury frames, so you don’t have to worry about harming your newest, most exciting accessory!

Keep Them in Their Case When You Aren’t Wearing Them.

Even if you’re wearing your eyewear all day, there’s still going to be a time when you take them off. And while you might be tempted to leave them on the nearest countertop or table, it’s always best practice to return your eyewear to the case they came in. This is doubly-true if you have pets or small children—it just takes one stray paw to send your lovely glasses flying off the nightstand!

Keep this in mind if you’re planning on carrying your glasses in something like a purse or a gymbag, as well. Letting them rub up against the items inside can scratch the lenses, and bulkier items can even crush them. So no matter where you plan on storing them, always make sure your glasses are in their case.

Take Them Off Correctly

Taking your glasses on and off might seem extremely straightforward—but taking off your eyewear incorrectly can actually damage your glasses! Taking off your glasses with one hand risks bending the frames. Instead, carefully remove your glasses with both hands. It’s a small change that can make a huge difference in prolonging your glasses’ lifespan.

You’ll want to be careful about resting them on your hair, as well, since the oils from styling products can get on your lenses. Similarly to pulling them off with one hand, this can potentially pull them out of shape.

Clean Them with a Microfiber Cloth

There are few things as annoying as a smudge on the lenses of our glasses. But before you reach for any old fabric to clean them off, remember that those bits of cloth have likely picked up all sorts of dirt and grime that you now risk streaking over your lenses. Instead, use that microfiber cloth that came with your glasses! Make sure you’ve washed your hands beforehand, too.

If you’re struggling with a particularly persistent smudge, you can also put the lenses under some gently-running water. Just make sure to let them dry before you you clean them off with the microfiber cloth, and don’t ever use any abrasive cleaners on your lenses.

Get Them Readjusted

Even the best-maintened glasses are likely to bend and twist over long period of time. As they continue to change their shape, glasses risk slipping off our faces, causing more damage. Because of this, you should try to take your glasses in to get them readjusted at least once a year. A great time to do this is right around your annual eye exam—that way you can be sure your glasses have the most up-to-date prescription.

Designer glasses are great—and with these tips you can be sure you’ll keep yours in the best condition for as long as possible. Don’t have a pair yet? Check out our full list of eyewear to find your new glasses today!
